The first group arrived in 1585. Ralph Lane was the leader. This group had many problems. They did not have enough food. They also had poor relations with local tribes. Because of this, they left in 1586.

A second group arrived in 1587. John White led these settlers. He wanted to build a town.

White had to sail back to England for more supplies. A war made it hard for him to return. He did not get back to the island until 1590.

White found the settlement was empty. The homes were gone. He saw the word "CROATOAN" carved into a fence. This meant the people might have moved to Croatoan Island.

Because the settlers vanished, people call this the "Lost Colony." Some people think they lived with nearby tribes. No one knows for sure what happened to them.
