The Roanoke Colony was a place where England tried to build homes in North America. These attempts happened on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. Sir Walter Raleigh was the man who organized these missions. He wanted to find new lands and resources for England. This history is famous because the people who lived there vanished. Many people call this group the "Lost Colony."

The first attempt began in 1585 as a military outpost. Ralph Lane was the governor of this group. The mission was led by Sir Richard Grenville. They faced many hard jobs while they were there. They did not have enough supplies to stay. They also had poor relations with some local Native American tribes. Because of these problems, Lane and his men left in 1586.

A second group arrived on the island in 1587. John White led these new settlers. He wanted to build a town called the "Cittie of Raleigh." A man named Simon Fernandes forced White to stay on the island instead of going to the Chesapeake Bay. White eventually went back to England to get more supplies. He hoped to return in 1588 to help the people.

War between England and Spain made it hard to travel. This delay meant White could not return until 1590. When he finally arrived, the settlement was empty. The buildings were fortified but no one was there. White found the word "CROATOAN" carved into a wooden fence. He thought the people moved to Croatoan Island. However, rough seas and a lost anchor forced him to sail home.

People have wondered about the 112 to 121 colonists for a long time. Some early writings suggested they joined nearby tribes. Later, stories from Jamestown suggested they might have been killed. No one has ever found certain proof of what happened. In 1834, a writer named George Bancroft wrote about them in a history book. His book made the settlers famous in American culture. One person mentioned was Virginia Dare, the first English child born there.
