Colony of Virginia

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Colony of Virginia was a very important English settlement in North America. It lasted from 1606 until 1776. Before Jamestown succeeded, there were many failed attempts to live there. In 1585, a group tried to settle at Roanoke. This became known as the "Lost Colony" because the people vanished. Another attempt by Sir Humphrey Gilbert in 1583 also failed. These early struggles showed how hard it was to start a new life.

In 1607, the Virginia Company sent settlers to start Jamestown. This company was given a charter by King James I. They used three ships named the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. The ships carried 105 men and boys along with 39 sailors. They arrived at the Chesapeake Bay after a long 144-day voyage. The settlers built a fort on Jamestown Island near the James River. They chose this spot because it was easy to defend from ships.

Life in the new colony was not easy at first. The settlers struggled with disease and a lack of fresh water. They also had many conflicts with the local Native American tribes. These tribes were part of the Powhatan Confederacy. This group was led by a chief named Wahunsenacawh. The Popham Colony, another group started in 1607, also failed due to famine and fighting. Jamestown almost failed too, but new supplies arrived by ship in 1610.

Success finally came when the settlers began growing tobacco. This plant became the colony's first profitable export. It changed how people lived and where they built homes. In 1624, King James I took control of the colony from the company. This made Virginia a royal colony under the King's authority. Later, King Charles II gave it the nickname "The Old Dominion." He did this because the people were very loyal to him.

Virginia had its own government called the General Assembly. This group worked with a governor to make laws from 1619 to 1775. Jamestown was the capital until 1699, when it moved to Williamsburg. Eventually, Virginia declared independence from Great Britain. It became the Commonwealth of Virginia and one of the first thirteen states. Much of the land in the United States today came from Virginia's original territory.
