The Straits Settlements were a group of lands in Southeast Asia.

These territories were very important for trade and travel. They helped connect different parts of the world through the sea. The group was made of several different places. These included Penang, Singapore, Malacca, and Dinding. Later, the group grew to include more islands.

Control of these lands changed many times over the years. In 1826, the British East India Company first managed them. In 1858, the British Raj took over the administration. By 1867, they became a Crown colony. This meant they were ruled directly by the British government in London. Singapore became the main center for the group in 1832.

This change happened after the capital moved from Penang.

Different places within the group had their own stories. Penang was the first settlement, starting in 1786. It included Penang Island and a mainland area called Province Wellesley. Malacca was a Dutch colony before the British took it in 1824. This happened through a treaty with the Dutch. Singapore became a busy trading post after 1819.

Stamford Raffles helped make Singapore a major port for the British.

Many different people lived in these settlements. By 1901, the total population was 572,249 people.

Most of the people were Chinese or Indian. There were also many Malay and Eurasian residents. Most of this growth came from people moving to the area. In 1906 alone, 285,560 people arrived as immigrants.

History brought big changes to the region during the 1940s. In 1941, Japanese forces invaded the area during World War II. They took control of the settlements for a few years. After the war ended, the Straits Settlements were dissolved in 1946. Most of the lands became part of Malaysia. Singapore eventually became its own country in 1965.
