Colony of Virginia

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Colony of Virginia was a foundational English settlement in North America. It existed from 1606 until 1776. This colony served as the first enduring English presence on the continent. Its history shaped the development of the Mid-Atlantic coastline. The colony eventually transitioned from a corporate venture to a royal province. Finally, it became one of the original thirteen states of the United States.

Before Jamestown succeeded, several English attempts to colonize the region failed. In 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert established a charter in Newfoundland. However, the site was abandoned and Gilbert perished when his ship capsized. Later, in 1585, Sir Walter Raleigh sent settlers to Roanoke Island. This attempt lasted for six years across three different tries. By 1590, the colony was abandoned and became known as the "Lost Colony." The houses remained intact, but the people had disappeared.

In 1606, King James I issued a second charter to organize new settlements. He used joint-stock companies to fund these expeditions. Two groups were formed: the Plymouth Company and the Virginia Company of London. The Plymouth Company established the Popham Colony on the Kennebec River in Maine. This colony failed within two years due to famine, disease, and conflicts with Native American tribes. The London Company focused on the area between the 34th and 41st parallels. They successfully founded Jamestown in 1607.

Jamestown was settled by a group led by Captain Christopher Newport. They sailed on three ships: the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. The voyage lasted 144 days before they reached the Chesapeake Bay. The settlers chose Jamestown Island for its defensive position. It offered deep water anchorage and was hard for enemy ships to attack. However, the location had few natural resources for farming. There was little game to hunt and no natural fresh drinking water.

Survival in Jamestown was extremely difficult during the early years. The colonists faced deaths from disease and conflicts with the Powhatan Confederacy. The Powhatan were a group of related tribes in the Tidewater region. They were led by the paramount chief Wahunsenacawh, known as Chief Powhatan. The settlement was on the brink of failure until new supplies arrived in 1610. Eventually, the colony found economic stability through tobacco. This crop became the first profitable export and changed the entire society.

Political structures changed as the colony matured. In 1619, the General Assembly was established to govern alongside a colonial governor. This legislature continued until 1775. In 1624, King James I revoked the Virginia Company's charter. This turned Virginia into a royal colony under the direct authority of the English crown. After the English Civil War, King Charles II gave the colony the nickname "The Old Dominion." He did this because the colonists remained loyal to the monarchy.

As the colony grew, its capital moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg in 1699. The colony also faced internal political turmoil, such as Bacon's Rebellion in 1676. During the American Revolutionary War, Virginia declared independence from Great Britain. It transitioned from a colony into the Commonwealth of Virginia. The territory once claimed by Virginia was massive. It eventually provided the land for modern states like West Virginia, Kentucky, and Michigan.

Today, the legacy of the colony remains in many places. The nickname "Old Dominion" is still used by the state. The University of Virginia's athletic teams are called the "Cavaliers" to honor supporters of Charles II. This history shows how early struggles led to the creation of a major American state. The transition from failed missions to a stable economy changed North American history forever.
