Long ago, the island was part of the mainland. About 14,000 years ago, glaciers melted and sea levels rose. This changed the shape of the coast. Around 400 AD, the sand dunes became separated from the mainland by water. This created the island we see today. For thousands of years, many different groups lived here. Archaeologists found evidence of people living on the island as far back as 8000 BC.

The island is named after the Roanoke people. They were part of the Algonquian group. They lived there for many generations before the English arrived. The name Roanoke might mean "white beads made from shells." These beads were very important for trade and decoration. The people often fished for oysters and clams. They also hunted deer and gathered nuts to eat.

English settlers arrived in the 1500s. Sir Walter Raleigh helped start the first colony in 1585. In 1587, a group of 120 men, women, and children arrived. A girl named Virginia Dare was born there. She was the first English child born in North America. Later, the settlers vanished. This is known as the "Lost Colony." It remains a mystery that researchers still study today.

During the American Civil War, the island changed again. In 1862, Union forces took over the island. Many enslaved African Americans moved there to find freedom. The Army helped them start the Roanoke Island Freedmen's Colony in 1863. They built a sawmill and grew their own food. This was a way for them to build a new community.

Today, Roanoke Island is a popular place for visitors. People come to see the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. They can also watch a play called "The Lost Colony." This is a large outdoor theater production. Many people also enjoy the water and the natural beauty of the sounds. It is a place where history and nature meet.
