Roanoke Island is a significant landmass located in Dare County, North Carolina. It sits near the Outer Banks and is bordered by several bodies of water. Albemarle Sound lies to the north, while Roanoke Sound is on the eastern side. Croatan Sound borders the west, and the Wanchese area is at the southern end. The town of Manteo serves as the county seat in the northern portion.

Today, U.S. Highway 64 connects the island to the mainland. The island is a major destination for tourism due to its history and water features.

The island's physical shape changed over thousands of years. Long ago, the North Carolina coast extended 50 miles further east. When glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere melted at least 14,000 years ago, sea levels rose. This process helped form the Outer Banks barrier islands. Around 6,000 B.C., the land began to stabilize into its current form. Originally, Roanoke Island was a large sand dune ridge. It was actually part of the mainland during early human habitation.

Around 400 A.D., an environmental transformation occurred on the island. The sand dunes became disconnected from the mainland by rising water. This change turned freshwater sounds into brackish ecosystems, which are waters containing both fresh and salt. The land formerly known as Roanoke Ridge became the island we see today. Archaeologists have found evidence of human occupation dating back to 8,000 B.C. at the Tillett Site in Wanchese. This site shows that various cultures lived there for millennia.

The island is named after the Roanoke people, an Algonquian-speaking group. They lived on the island for many generations before English arrival. The name Roanoke likely comes from the Powhatan language. It means "white beads made from shells" or "things rubbed smooth by hand." These white beads were used as ornaments and currency. The Roanoke people traded these shells across the continent. At the time of English contact, the tribe numbered between 5,000 and 10,000 members. They were often loyal to the Secotan people.

English history on the island began in the 16th century. Sir Walter Raleigh helped establish the first colony in 1585. In 1587, a group of 120 men, women, and children arrived. During this time, Eleanor Dare gave birth to Virginia Dare. She was the first English child born in North America. However, Governor John White could not return for supplies until 1590. When he arrived, the entire colony had vanished. This mysterious event is often called the "Lost Colony."

The island also played a role during the American Civil War. In 1862, Union forces took control of the area. Many enslaved African Americans moved to the island seeking freedom. In 1863, the Army established the Roanoke Island Freedmen's Colony. This was an important social experiment for the U.S. government. It allowed formerly enslaved people to develop a self-sustaining community. They built a sawmill and were allotted land to cultivate. Many men from this colony also joined the United States Colored Troops.

Today, Roanoke Island remains a place of deep historical study. Visitors can explore the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. They can also watch "The Lost Colony," a long-running outdoor theater production. This play offers a conjecture about what happened to the original settlers. The island's population was 6,724 according to the 2000 census. It remains a vital part of North Carolina's coastal identity. The history of the island connects ancient indigenous cultures to colonial struggles and modern freedom.
