Cape Hatteras is a special cape located on Hatteras Island. This island is part of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. These are long, thin barrier islands that arch into the Atlantic Ocean.

The landscape is shaped by wind, waves, and storms. You can find long beaches, sand dunes, marshes, and maritime forests here. To the east lies the Atlantic Ocean. To the west is the Pamlico Sound. This area is where two great ocean basins meet. It is also the closest land to Bermuda on the North American mainland.

The waters around the cape are very dangerous for sailors. Hidden beneath the sea are shifting sand ridges called Diamond Shoals. Because so many ships have wrecked here, people call it the "Graveyard of the Atlantic."

Over 600 ships have been lost to storms, war, or shallow sands. For 400 years, this place has been a risky path for travelers. However, local villagers have worked hard to help. Since the 1870s, they have served in the United States Life-Saving Service. They also worked in lighthouses to guide ships safely past the shoals.

History is found all over this coast. The name Hatteras comes from the Hatteras Indians.

In 1585, an explorer named Sir Richard Grenville named a nearby inlet "Hatrask." The first lighthouse at the cape was built in 1803. The current lighthouse was built in 1870. It is the tallest lighthouse in the United States. In 1999, people had to move the 4,830-ton lighthouse inland. They moved it 2,900 feet to keep it safe from the shrinking shoreline.

The weather at Cape Hatteras is humid and subtropical.

Summers are long and hot, while winters are short and mild. Because it is near the water, it stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter than places inland. It is the wettest coastal spot in North Carolina. September is usually the wettest month due to tropical storms. This area is at high risk for hurricanes.
