The Atlantic Plain is a very special part of the United States. It is one of eight main land divisions in the country.

This area is the flattest of all the land divisions. It stretches from Cape Cod in the north all the way down to the Mexican border. It even reaches further south to the Yucatán Peninsula. The land is made of many different parts like the Coastal Plain and the Continental Shelf.

The land works in a very gentle way. It slopes slowly toward the sea from the higher lands inland. This slope creates a series of flat steps called terraces. This gentle slope continues under the water into the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. This underwater part is called the continental shelf. It can be very wide in some places. Off the coast of Maine, it is more than 420 km wide. Near Florida, it is less than 1 km wide.

Scientists use special names to describe the history of the land. They look at the layers of rock and soil. Most of the ground is made of sand and clay. These layers have not hardened into solid rock yet. These are called unlithified sediments. Near Cape Hatteras in North Carolina, these layers are very thick. They can reach a thickness of about 3 kilometers. This makes the ground very different from rocky mountains.

Nature is very busy in the Atlantic Plain. It is a global biodiversity hotspot. This means many different living things live here. There are over 1500 plant species that are found nowhere else.

You might see longleaf pine woodlands in Virginia or Florida. These woods need fire to stay healthy. Many animals call this place home too. You might find a red wolf, a gopher tortoise, or an American alligator.

People use this land in many ways today. The soft soil is often used for agriculture, which is farming.

You can see flat fields of wheat in places like Maryland. The land is also very wet in many spots. There are many marshes, wetlands, and big bays. In Florida, the Everglades is a very famous wet area. Some parts of the coast are hard to tell from the sea. This happens in the Louisiana bayous and the Florida Everglades.
