Dutty Boukman was a leader in the Haitian Revolution. He was born in Senegambia around 1767. He was part of a Muslim family. Later, he was taken as a slave. He worked on islands like Jamaica and Saint-Domingue. Saint-Domingue is the old name for Haiti.

Boukman worked as a coach driver. This job let him travel between many farms. He used this time to talk to people. He shared news and helped people plan to fight for freedom. He met Jean-Jacques Dessalines during this time. They both wanted to lead a revolt.

In August 1791, Boukman helped lead a big meeting. This meeting was at a place called Bois Caïman. He worked with a priestess named Cécile Fatiman. This meeting helped start the slave revolt. Boukman led many people to fight. His group grew to about fifteen thousand people.

French soldiers killed Boukman in November 1791. He died while defending a rebel base. Even after his death, people remembered him. He is a very important part of Haiti's history today.
