Catherine Flon was a seamstress in Haiti. She was born in 1772 in Arcahaie. Her parents traded cloth from France. Catherine ran her own sewing shop. She even taught others how to sew.

Catherine is a hero of the Haitian Revolution. This was a time when Haiti fought for independence. A leader named Jean-Jacques Dessalines was her godfather. On May 18, 1803, a big meeting happened. Dessalines cut a French flag into pieces. He gave the pieces to Catherine. She sewed them back together. She left out the middle white strip. This made a new blue and red flag.

In Haitian stories, the colors show unity. The blue and red represent different groups of people. Some historians say rebels used these colors before. They say the first flags had different meanings.

Today, Catherine Flon is a great symbol. Her home town is called "flag town." May 18 is a national holiday. Many women look up to her. They dress like her during festivals. Her face is even on a 10-Gourdes banknote.
