Catherine Flon was a significant figure in the history of Haiti. She was a skilled seamstress and a dedicated patriot. Today, she is recognized as a national heroine of Haiti. Her life is deeply connected to the Haitian Revolution. This was a period when people fought for independence. Flon serves as a powerful symbol of that struggle. She is remembered for her role in creating the first Haitian flag.

Flon was born on December 2, 1772. Her birthplace was Arcahaie in Saint-Domingue. Her family had a connection to the textile industry. Her parents traded textiles that came from France. Because of this background, Flon became a professional seamstress. She managed her own sewing workshop. She also taught several apprentices her trade. This shows she was a successful businessperson in her community.

According to revolutionary tradition, Flon performed a historic task in 1803. This happened on May 18, during the Congress of Arcahaie. This congress was a major meeting for the revolution. Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a leader of the revolution. He was also the godfather of Catherine Flon. During the meeting, Dessalines used a sabre to cut a French tricolor flag. This act symbolized a desire to break away from France.

After cutting the flag, Dessalines gave the pieces to Flon. She used her sewing skills to join them together. However, she did not include the central white strip. This resulted in a new flag with only blue and red stripes. In Haitian lore, these colors have a specific meaning. The blue and red represent a union between different citizens. Specifically, they represent the black and mulatto populations of Haiti.

Historians have noted some complexities regarding this legend. Some primary sources from the revolution suggest different details. For example, rebels had used blue and red flags before the meeting. The first people to use these colors had different goals. They originally wanted to preserve the 1794 law of emancipation. They were not initially fighting for full independence from France. These details show how history can have many layers.

Flon remains a massive figure in Haitian culture and memory. She is considered one of three most symbolic heroines of independence. The other two are Cécile Fatiman and Dédée Bazile. Her birthplace, Arcahaie, is now known as "flag town." The date of the flag's creation, May 18, is a national holiday. This holiday allows the nation to celebrate its history.

Many Haitian women look to Flon as a figure of admiration. She represents the strength of women in the revolution. During festivals, young women often dress as Flon. This practice draws attention to the role of women in history. Her impact is even seen in the country's economy. In the year 2000, her image was featured on a 10-Gourdes banknote. This money serves as a daily reminder of her legacy.
