Flag of France

society Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The national flag of France is a tricolour design. It consists of three vertical bands of color. These colors are blue, white, and red. The blue band is located on the hoist side, which is the side closest to the flagpole. This flag is one of the most influential symbols in history. Many other nations in Europe and around the world have adopted tricolour schemes. Historically, this design stood in symbolic opposition to the royal standards of the past.

The flag follows specific rules for its shape and proportions. Currently, the flag is one and a half times wider than its height. This means it has a proportion of 2:3. In most cases, the three stripes are of equal width. However, the French Navy follows a different rule. They use stripes with unequal widths. The blue stripe is 30 parts, the white is 33, and the red is 37. This specific ratio was established by a regulation on 17 May 1853. It was designed to help the flag look better when it is flapping in the wind.

There are two main versions of the flag used today. The first version uses a dark navy blue. The second version uses a lighter shade of blue. Both versions were in use starting in 1976. President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing introduced the lighter version. Most town halls and public buildings usually fly the darker version. However, the lighter version was sometimes used on official State buildings. In July 2020, President Emmanuel Macron chose to use the darker hue at the Élysée Palace. He did this as a symbol of the French Revolution.

The history of the flag begins with much older symbols. Before the French Revolution, the royal government used different flags. One famous version was a white flag with gold fleurs-de-lis. These are stylized lily symbols used by the monarchy. In the early days of the Revolution, the Paris militia wore blue and red cockades. A cockade is a circular, rosette-like emblem worn on a hat. Blue and red were the traditional colors of the city of Paris.

General Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, played a key role in the flag's development. He described white as the "ancient French colour." He helped add white to the blue and red militia cockade. This created a national cockade for France. This design became part of the uniform for the National Guard. The National Guard was a force that succeeded the militia. The tricolour flag was officially adopted in 1790. Originally, the red stripe was closest to the flagpole, but the design changed. A modified version by Jacques-Louis David was adopted in 1794.

Political changes caused the flag to appear and disappear throughout history. The royal white flag was used during the Bourbon Restoration from 1815 to 1830. The tricolour returned after the July Revolution of 1830. There was also a very brief interruption in 1848. The flag has remained the national emblem since then. Article 2 of the 1958 French constitution officially names the tricolour as the national emblem. While the colors are official, no law specifies the exact shades of blue or red.

People have assigned many different meanings to the three colors. Some suggest the colors represent the three estates of the old French system. In this view, white represents the clergy, red represents the nobility, and blue represents the bourgeoisie. Others link the colors to the revolutionary motto. In this interpretation, blue stands for freedom, white for equality, and red for brotherhood. The colors are also associated with Saint Martin and Saint Denis. They are also linked to the Virgin Mary, the patroness of France.
