Flag of Italy

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The national flag of Italy is a vertical tricolour. It consists of three equal stripes of green, white, and red. The green stripe is located at the hoist side, which is the side closest to the flagpole. This specific design is officially defined by Article 12 of the Constitution of the Italian Republic. The Italian law regulates how the flag is displayed and used. It also protects the flag from being insulted. Schools in Italy are required to teach the flag alongside other national symbols.

The origins of these colors are tied to the era of the French Revolution. The Italian tricolour was inspired by the French flag, which used blue, white, and red. During the French Revolution, the journalist Camille Desmoulins once suggested green as a symbol of hope. While the French eventually chose blue, Italian revolutionaries chose green for different reasons. They believed green represented nature. This choice served as a metaphor for natural rights, social equality, and freedom. These were central principles to the Italian Jacobins, who were supporters of revolutionary ideals.

Before it was a large flag, the colors appeared as small circular ornaments called cockades. The first documented use of the Italian colors occurred in Genoa on 21 August 1789. During this time, demonstrators wore red, white, and green cockades on their clothing. Later, in November 1794, students at the University of Bologna used these colors. Led by Luigi Zamboni and Giovanni Battista De Rolandis, these students were known as patriots. They wore the cockades to show they supported revolutionary ideals while distinguishing themselves from the French.

As Napoleon Bonaparte entered the Italian peninsula, the tricolour became more prominent in military settings. On 13 May 1796, a document in Cherasco mentioned municipal banners with these colors. Later, on 11 October 1796, the Lombard Legion was formed. This was the first Italian military unit to adopt a red, white, and green war flag. Napoleon himself wrote to the French Directorate to confirm that the national colours they had adopted were green, white, and red. This military use helped the colours spread across the Italian peninsula.

A major turning point occurred in Reggio Emilia. On 7 January 1797, the Cispadane Republic became the first sovereign Italian state to officially adopt the tricolour. A deputy named Giuseppe Compagnoni proposed the design. Because of this, he is often called the "father of the Italian flag." The decision was met with great enthusiasm, including loud applause from the delegates. The flag of the Cispadane Republic was a horizontal square. It featured a red top section and a white middle section with a laurel garland emblem.

Over the next several decades, the tricolour became a powerful symbol of Italian unification. It represented the struggle for independence from foreign powers. This movement eventually led to the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy on 17 March 1861. From that point on, the tricolour was the national flag of the united state. It has remained one of the most recognisable features of Italian identity for over two centuries. The flag helped connect different regions under one shared symbol.

Today, Italy celebrates the flag every year on 7 January. This is known as Tricolour Day. The holiday was established by law n. 671 on 31 December 1996. The date commemorates the 1797 adoption by the Cispadane Republic. This celebration allows the nation to reflect on its history and its journey toward unification. The flag continues to serve as a symbol of the country's long history of social and political change.
