The national flag of Italy is a beautiful symbol. It is often called the Tricolour. The flag has three stripes of equal size. These stripes stand vertically. The colors are green, white, and red. The green stripe is always on the side closest to the flagpole. This design is part of the law in Italy. The Constitution of the Italian Republic defines it.

Long ago, these colors were used in different ways. People wore small round decorations called cockades. These pins showed what people believed in. In 1789, people in Genoa wore green, white, and red cockades. Later, students in Bologna wore them too. These students were called patriots. They wanted more freedom and equality for their people. They used the colors to show their special ideas.

History shows how the colors changed over time. The Italian colors were inspired by the French flag. The French flag used blue, white, and red. Italian groups decided to use green instead of blue. They felt green represented nature. It also stood for natural rights and social equality. In 1796, the Lombard Legion used these colors. They made a military war flag with green, white, and red.

A very important moment happened in 1797. A group called the Cispadane Republic made the flag official. This happened in a place called Reggio Emilia. A man named Giuseppe Compagnoni proposed the idea. Many people call him the "father of the Italian flag." The delegates were very happy when they decided on the colors. They even cheered and applauded loudly. This was the first time a sovereign state adopted the Tricolour.

The flag helped bring the country together. It became a symbol of Italian unification. On March 17, 1861, the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed. The Tricolour became the national flag of this new state. It has been a famous symbol for over two hundred years. Today, Italy celebrates Tricolour Day every year on January 7. This day remembers when the flag was first adopted. It is a time to honor Italian history.
