The flag of France is a famous symbol known as a tricolour. It features three vertical stripes of blue, white, and red.

This design is very influential and has been copied by many other nations. Some people believe the colors represent the famous motto of the French Revolution. In this view, blue stands for freedom and white stands for equality. Red is often linked to the idea of brotherhood.

The flag works by using three distinct bands of color. Most of the time, these stripes are all the same width. However, the French Navy uses a different way to size them. They use stripes that are not equal in width. The blue stripe is 30 parts, the white is 33, and the red is 37.

This special sizing helps the flag look better when it flaps in the wind. It makes the parts farther from the pole look larger to the eye.

History shows that the flag grew from older symbols. Before the revolution, the royal government used a white flag. This flag often had gold fleurs-de-lis, which are lily symbols, on it.

During the revolution, people in Paris wore blue and red badges called cockades. A leader named Lafayette helped add white to these city colors. This created a new national cockade in 1789. The official tricolour flag was then approved in October 1790.

Many specific changes happened to the flag over the years. In 1794, a new design was adopted by Jacques-Louis David. The flag was replaced by a white royal flag from 1815 to 1830. It returned after the July Revolution of 1830. In 1976, a lighter version of the blue was introduced.

Since July 2020, President Emmanuel Macron has used the darker navy blue version at the Élysée Palace. This choice was made to honor the history of the French Revolution.

Today, the flag connects the past to the modern world. You can see it flying on town halls and public buildings. It is even used as a backdrop for important news events. Sometimes, a special flag with a narrower white stripe is used for photos. This ensures all three colors stay in the camera frame.
