You can find her in many places across France today. She is shown in town halls and law courts. Her face even appears on French euro coins and postage stamps.

She helps people think of the nation as a group of free citizens.

Her look has changed many times to match what was happening in France. In the early days, she was often shown as a calm woman. She frequently wore a red Phrygian cap to show freedom.

During very violent times, her image became much more fierce. Some drawings showed her leading people into battle. Later, during more peaceful times, she was shown leaning on a book of laws.

This helped show that the government was following rules rather than using force.

This symbol began during the French Revolution in 1789. Before this, the country was led by kings.

Using a woman as a symbol helped show a break from the old monarchy. In September 1792, the government even made a rule for her official image. They wanted her to hold a spear with a Phrygian cap on top. This was meant to show the liberation of the French people.

Many different artists have created their own versions of Marianne. In 1830, Eugène Delacroix painted a famous picture called "Liberty Leading the People."

In 1848, the government held a contest to find new ways to show her. This led to two different styles of Marianne being used. One was a fighting version, and the other was a quiet, calm version. By 1875, her image was used all over the country.

Marianne is a special kind of symbol that brings people together. In the United States, people often look to leaders like George Washington. In France, the leaders chose an abstract symbol instead of a real person.

Because she is an idea rather than a person, she does not cause arguments. This makes her a unifying symbol for all French citizens. She remains a steady part of how France sees itself today.
