The hammer and sickle is a very famous symbol.

It represents a special bond between two groups of people. The hammer stands for industrial workers who work in factories. The sickle stands for peasants who work on farms. Together, these tools show unity between workers and farmers. This symbol is used to represent communism and socialist ideas. It has become a globally recognized sign for many different political movements.

The symbol was first designed in 1918 by Yevgeny Kamzolkin. He created it for a celebration in the Zamoskvorechye District of Moscow. His first version actually included a sword. However, a leader named Lenin did not like the sword. He thought the sword looked too much like war. Because of this, the sword was removed from the design. The emblem was officially adopted on July 6, 1923.

Many different places have used this symbol over the years. In the Soviet Union, it appeared on many things. You could see it on the state emblem and on military caps. It was even part of the insignia for the Order of the Patriotic War.

Some places used different tools to send a similar message. The flag of Angola uses a machete and a cog.

The flag of Mozambique uses a hoe and an AKM.

Today, the symbol is still used in several countries. The ruling communist parties in China, Vietnam, and Laos all use it. It is also seen in parts of Russia, like the Vladimir Oblast. Some places, like Transnistria, use a version of it on their flags.

However, some countries have different rules about the symbol. In places like Georgia, Hungary, and Ukraine, the symbol is banned. These countries view it as a symbol of a criminal ideology.

History shows that symbols can change and grow over time. Long before the Soviet Union, Chilean money used worker symbols in 1894. In 1919, Austria even put a hammer and sickle on its coat of arms. They removed them in 1934 but brought them back in 1945. This shows how much symbols can be tied to the history of a nation. Even famous artists like Andy Warhol have used the symbol in their art. It remains one of the most recognizable signs in the world.
