Realism (arts)

Realism is a way of making art that tries to show the truth. Instead of making things look perfect, artists show subjects without adding fake or magical parts. This can mean showing things exactly as they appear to our eyes. Some people use the word naturalism to describe this kind of lifelike style. Naturalism focuses on showing objects with very little distortion. It uses tricks like linear perspective to make a flat painting look like a real space.

There are different ways artists work to show the real world. Some focus on the subject matter, which means what the art is actually about. These artists might choose to paint everyday people or even messy, unglamorous scenes. Other artists focus on illusionism, which is the skill of making things look real to the eye. They study how light hits a surface or how colors change in the distance. They also learn how to draw the human body and animals very accurately.

This way of making art has a very long history. In the 4th century BCE, a sculptor named Demetrius of Alopece made work that preferred realism over perfect beauty. During the Roman Republic, many politicians wanted portraits that showed their true faces. Later, in the 15th century, artists like Jan van Eyck used new oil painting tools. These tools helped them paint light and detail with great precision. In the 19th century, a major Realism movement began in France after the revolution of 1848.

Many famous names are linked to these different styles. Gustave Courbet was a painter who focused on common life and social issues. He did not always try to make things look perfectly pretty. In Italy, artists like Caravaggio painted religious scenes that looked like they were in real city streets. The art critic Jules-Antoine Castagnary helped define the naturalist school in 1863. He said art should be a way to reproduce nature with truth and science. Even writers like Émile Zola used these ideas in their novels.

Realism connects to many different types of art we see today. It is not just for paintings on a wall. You can find it in books, plays, and even movies. For example, Italian neorealist cinema uses these ideas on the screen. There is also a style in opera called verismo that focuses on real life. Whether it is a tiny drawing in a book margin or a huge painting, realism helps us notice the world. It invites us to see the beauty in the ordinary.
