arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Figurative art is art that looks like things from the real world. This includes paintings and sculptures. It is also called representational art. It uses real objects as a source. This is different from abstract art. Abstract art does not have clear links to real objects. Some people call abstract art non-objective art.

Artists use many tools to make these works. They use lines and shapes to build forms. They use color and light to add life. They also use texture and volume. They use perspective to show depth. These tools create an illusion of space. They also help tell a story in the art.

Many artists use these tools to show people. They might paint human figures or animals. This is called figure painting. But figurative art can be more than just people. It can show landscapes or the sea. It can show still life or townscapes. It can even show buildings in architecture.

Long ago, Greek art was not always realistic. It used geometric shapes instead. By 480 B.C., Greeks used mimesis. This means they used observation to make art. In 1510, Giorgione painted Sleeping Venus. This was a famous reclining nude painting. Later, Nicolas Poussin used logic and order. He inspired many artists like Paul Cézanne. These ideas led to the art of the 20th century.
