How does a revolution actually happen? It usually starts with many people working together. This is called mass mobilization. People might join large protests or go on strikes. Sometimes they use non-institutional actions to force change. Some revolutions begin in big cities to take control of the capital. Other revolutions start with farmers in the countryside. They might use guerrilla warfare to reach their goals. These actions aim to replace the old ways with new ones.

The word "revolution" has a long history. In the 1300s and 1400s, it meant the motion of stars. It described things that revolve in a circle. By the mid-1400s, it began to mean a change in times. The political meaning grew stronger over many years. By 1688, people used it to describe the Glorious Revolution in England. This was when William III replaced James II. Since then, the word has mostly meant changing political institutions.
