This design is called a tricolour. It became the national flag during the French Revolution.

Before this, the royal government used different flags. One famous flag was white with gold symbols. In Paris, people used blue and red colors. They wore these colors on a cockade. A cockade is a round badge worn on a hat.

A leader named Lafayette helped add white to these colors. This created the tricolour design.

The flag has changed over time. In 1790, the stripes were in a different order. Later, a new design was used in 1794. The flag was even replaced by a white flag for a few years. But the tricolour came back after the July Revolution.
