It is known as a flag carrier. This means it is the primary airline representing its nation. The company is based at the Roissypôle complex. This complex is located at Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris.

Today, the airline is part of a larger group. This group is called the Air France-KLM Group. It helps the airline fly people and goods all over the world.

Flying works by using many different kinds of aircraft.

For very long trips, the airline uses wide-body jets. These are large planes that can carry many people across oceans. For shorter trips, they use narrow-body aircraft. The Airbus A320 family is one type used for these shorter paths.

For smaller regional trips, they use regional jets. This way, the airline can reach many different places efficiently.

The history of Air France began a long time ago.

It was formed on August 30, 1933. This happened when five different airlines merged into one. One of these was the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale. Another was the Société Générale des Transports Aériens. These companies had already built large networks across Europe. They even flew to places in North Africa. After the Second World War, the French government took control of the airline in 1945.

Air France has reached many big milestones over the years.

In 1953, the airline entered the jet age. This changed travel by making it much faster. In 1974, it became the first user of the Airbus A300.

The airline also flew the famous Concorde. This was a supersonic transport, or SST. An SST is a plane that flies faster than the speed of sound. It could fly from Paris to New York in just 3 hours and 23 minutes.

In 2019, the airline carried 46,803,000 passengers. It serves 201 destinations in 78 different countries. This includes many overseas territories of France. When you see a large plane at an airport, it might be part of this massive network. Air France helps move millions of people to new places every year.
