This airline is famous for flying to more places from one single airport than anyone else. Its main base is the large Istanbul Airport in Arnavutköy.

The airline works by moving both people and goods across the sky. It uses a large fleet of planes to fly its scheduled services. There is also a special division called Turkish Cargo. This part of the company uses 24 cargo aircraft to move items. These cargo planes visit 82 different destinations.

The company also owns a low-cost airline called AJet. All these different parts work together to keep the world moving. They use many types of planes to reach far-off lands.

The history of the airline began a long time ago. It was started on 20 May 1933. At first, it was known as Turkish State Airlines. It was a department of the Ministry of National Defense.

The very first fleet was very small. It had two five-seat Curtiss Kingbirds and two four-seat Junkers F 13s. There was also one ten-seat Tupolev ANT-9. In 1935, the airline moved to the Ministry of Public Works. Later, in 1938, it became part of the Ministry of Transportation.

As the years passed, the airline grew and changed. It started international flights in 1947 between Ankara, Istanbul, and Athens. In 1956, it was renamed Türk Hava Yolları A.O. The airline added its first jet, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, in 1967.

It later added Boeing 707 jets in 1971. The company faced hard times in the 1980s and 1990s. It had to deal with flight delays and accidents. One major accident happened in 1974 near Ermenonville, France. However, a new government in 1983 helped make the airline modern again.

You can see how Turkish Airlines connects to the modern world today. It is a member of the Star Alliance network. It joined this group on 1 April 2008.

This means it works with many other famous airlines. The airline also sponsors big events like the top European basketball league. It has even painted planes with special colors for soccer clubs.
