Turkish Airlines, legally known as Türk Hava Yolları Anonim Ortaklığı, is the national flag carrier of Turkey. It functions as a massive global connector for both people and goods. The airline operates scheduled services to 352 different destinations. These locations span across Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, and the Americas. It serves 131 countries, which is more than any other airline in the world.

The company is famous for serving more non-stop destinations from a single airport than any other carrier. Its primary hub is Istanbul Airport in Arnavutköy. Its corporate headquarters are located at Atatürk Airport in Yeşilköy, Istanbul.

The airline manages several distinct operational divisions to maintain its global reach. The main division handles passenger services across its massive network. Another specialized division is known as Turkish Cargo. This division manages the transport of goods using a fleet of 24 cargo aircraft. These cargo planes serve 82 different destinations around the world.

The company also owns a low-cost subsidiary named AJet. These different branches allow the company to serve many different types of travelers and shipping needs.

The history of the airline began in the early 20th century. It was established on 20 May 1933 as Turkish State Airlines. At that time, it was a department of the Ministry of National Defense.

The initial fleet was very small and limited. It included two five-seat Curtiss Kingbirds and two four-seat Junkers F 13s. There was also one ten-seat Tupolev ANT-9. In 1935, the airline moved to the Ministry of Public Works. By 1938, it became part of the Ministry of Transportation.

As the airline grew, it moved from domestic flights to international routes. It started international service in 1947 with flights between Ankara, Istanbul, and Athens. In 1956, the government reorganized the company as Türk Hava Yolları A.O. The airline joined the International Air Transport Association, or IATA, shortly after this change. The 1960s brought the era of jet engines to the fleet. The first jet, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, began operating in 1967.

This was followed by the addition of Boeing 707 jets in 1971. Other models like the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 were added in the early 1970s.

The 1980s and 1990s were periods of significant challenge and transformation. The airline struggled with service reputation and frequent flight delays. During this time, 47 out of every 100 flights did not depart on time. The airline also faced safety challenges, including seven accidents between 1974 and 1983. One notable tragedy was the 1974 crash of Flight 981 near Ermenonville, France. This accident was caused by a design flaw in a cargo door.

A new government in 1983 began a massive makeover of the airline. This process turned it into a modern operation with a very young fleet.

In the modern era, the airline has become a major player in international alliances. It joined the Star Alliance network on 1 April 2008. This makes it a key member of a large global group of airlines.

The company has also invested heavily in technical services. Its technical branch, Turkish Technic, employed 2,700 workers by 2010. It provides maintenance for its own planes and for other companies too. The airline also uses advanced flight simulators for training pilots.

Turkish Airlines is also known for its high-profile sponsorships and unique liveries. The airline has used special paint designs to support various organizations. For example, it has featured colors for the FC Barcelona soccer club.

It also serves as the primary sponsor for the top European basketball league. These partnerships help connect the airline to global sports culture. Today, the airline remains a vital gateway connecting Turkey to the rest of the world.
