LATAM Airlines is the largest airline holding company in Latin America. It operates as a massive multinational network that connects many continents.

The group provides travel services across Latin America, North America, the Caribbean, Oceania, Asia, and Europe. It maintains several major hubs to manage its vast flight schedules. These primary hubs are located at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago, Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo, and Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima.

Secondary hubs also support the network in cities like Bogotá, Quito, Guayaquil, and Asunción.

The airline's modern structure resulted from a major corporate takeover. On June 22, 2012, the Chilean company LAN completed its takeover of the Brazilian airline TAM Linhas Aéreas. This merger formed the LATAM Airlines Group.

In August 2015, the companies announced they would rebrand as LATAM. By 2018, all aircraft used a single livery, which is the specific design and colors on the plane. Currently, LATAM Chile and LATAM Brasil operate as separate companies. However, they both function under the LATAM Airlines Group, which acts as the parent company.

The history of the airline began nearly a century ago. It was founded by Arturo Merino Benítez, a Chilean Air Force Commodore.

Operations officially started on March 5, 1929, under the name Línea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica. The first fleet used small de Havilland Moth planes. In 1932, the company rebranded as Línea Aérea Nacional de Chile, using the acronym LAN Chile. For many years, LAN Chile served as the flag carrier of Chile. This status continued until the government privatized the airline during the 1990s.

Technology and fleet changes drove the airline's expansion. During World War II, the airline faced difficulties getting spare parts for German Junkers engines. This led them to adopt Lockheed and Douglas aircraft instead.

In 1956, a Douglas DC-6B performed the first commercial flight over Antarctica.

The airline entered the jet era in 1963 with French Sud Aviation Caravelle aircraft. Later, the purchase of Boeing 707 jets allowed for long-haul routes to Europe and the United States.

These jets changed how far the airline could travel.

Significant milestones include record-breaking flights and new routes. In 1967, a Sud Aviation Caravelle made the first ILS landing in South America at Lima. This used an Instrument Landing System to help guide the plane. In 1974, Captain Jorge Jarpa Reyes flew the first transpolar non-stop flight. This flight traveled from Punta Arenas, Chile, to Sydney, Australia.

The airline also pioneered "Air Cruises" in 1985. These were special world tours using a Boeing 707 named Three Oceans. These flights visited 18 different locations across Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

The company has grown through strategic acquisitions and partnerships. In 1995, LAN Chile acquired Ladeco, the second-largest airline in Chile. It also acquired AIRES, a major carrier in Colombia, in 2010.

The airline was also a member of the Oneworld alliance from 2000 until 2020. These moves helped the company expand its presence in Argentina, Ecuador, and Peru. Today, the group manages a massive logistics and passenger network across the Western Hemisphere.

Modern operations rely on advanced aircraft like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

These planes are used for medium and long-haul routes. The airline's growth reflects the broader development of global aviation. It moved from small postal flights to a massive international corporation. This transition involved shifting from local airports to large, modern international hubs. The company continues to connect distant parts of the world through its complex network of flights.
