Lufthansa operates using a hub-and-spoke model to connect global destinations. The corporate headquarters are located in Cologne. The airline's primary operations base is the Lufthansa Aviation Center.

This center is located at Frankfurt Airport, which serves as the airline's main hub. Lufthansa also maintains a secondary hub at Munich Airport. It also operates a Flight Operations Centre. By concentrating flights at these hubs, the airline can efficiently move passengers between domestic and international routes.

The modern history of Lufthansa began with a post-war reformation. The original Deutsche Luft Hansa was founded in 1926 through a merger. However, that company was liquidated in 1951 due to its associations with the Nazi regime. To create a new national airline, a company called Luftag was founded in Cologne on 6 January 1953. Many of the staff members had previously worked for the original airline. In 1954, Luftag acquired the name and logo of the former carrier.

Their first aircraft, a Convair 340, was delivered in August 1954.

Lufthansa has been a leader in aviation technology for decades. In 1958, the airline entered the jet age by ordering Boeing 707 aircraft.

This makes them the first foreign launch customer for a Boeing airliner. In 1970, Lufthansa became the first European airline to introduce the Boeing 747 on regular passenger services.

The company also participated in the wide-body era with the DC-10-30 and the Airbus A300. In 1979, they were launch customers for the Airbus A310. Recent years saw the introduction of very large aircraft like the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747-8I.

Strategic growth and restructuring have shaped the company's recent years. Following German reunification in 1990, Lufthansa quickly reintegrated Berlin into its network. In the mid-1990s, the company began establishing independent operating companies. This included the creation of Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo. The group also grew through major acquisitions. They acquired Swiss International Air Lines in 2005 and Austrian Airlines in 2009.

However, the airline has also faced economic challenges. In 2010 and 2011, the company reported significant losses due to the economic recession. This led to a restructuring program called SCORE to improve operating profit. In 2012, the company cut 3,500 administrative positions.

Today, Lufthansa remains a vital part of the global transportation system. The airline uses a diverse fleet to serve various needs. For long-haul routes, they rely on aircraft like the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787.

By connecting hubs like Frankfurt and Munich to the rest of the world, Lufthansa facilitates international travel and commerce. The company continues to adapt to the changing needs of the global aviation market.
