The company is headquartered in the Shunyi District of Beijing. It operates a massive network of both domestic and international flights. Air China is one of the largest airlines in China. It is 53.46% owned by the state-owned China National Aviation Holding. The airline serves as a vital link for travelers moving across the globe.

The airline functions through a system of major hubs and complex networks. Hub airports are central locations where many flight paths meet.

Air China uses Beijing and Chengdu as its primary hubs. From these locations, it reaches destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Western Europe, and North America. It is one of the few airlines in the world that flies to all six habitable continents. This global reach includes long-distance service to South America, such as the route to São Paulo-Guarulhos. This specific flight is the airline's longest direct service.

Air China's history began with a major structural change in the Chinese aviation industry. In late 1987, the Chinese government decided to split the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). This organization was divided into six separate airlines. Air China was established on 1 July 1988 as one of these new entities. It was assigned the primary responsibility for intercontinental flights. To do this, it took over the CAAC's long-haul aircraft and routes. These included Boeing 707, 747, and 767 models.

Growth occurred through several strategic mergers and acquisitions over many years. In January 2001, Air China began a plan to acquire China Southwest Airlines. This merger was significant for the company's scale. It created a group with assets valued at 56 billion yuan, or about US$8.63 billion. The group also gained a fleet of 118 aircraft. Later, in October 2002, the company consolidated with China National Aviation Holding. Air China also expanded its presence in Hong Kong. In 2009, it increased its stake in Cathay Pacific from 17.5% to 30%.

The airline has implemented many technological and service innovations. In 2010, it became the first Chinese airline to offer combined tickets. These tickets connect domestic flights with shuttle bus services to nearby cities. This makes traveling from places like Tianjin to Beijing much easier. In 2011, Air China became the first Chinese carrier to offer free Wi-Fi on board. This service is designed for use with tablets and laptops. By 2013, the airline successfully tested Wireless LAN in flight. This was the first global satellite internet flight in Mainland China.

Air China maintains a diverse fleet of modern aircraft to manage its many routes. The fleet includes models from several different manufacturers.

It uses Airbus models like the A320, A330, and the A350-900. It also operates Boeing aircraft, including the 737, 777-300ER, and the 787-9. Furthermore, the airline uses aircraft from Comac, such as the C909 and C919-100ER. The Boeing 777-300ER serves as the backbone for many long-haul operations. These planes are used for major routes to cities like Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.

Branding and international cooperation are also central to the airline's identity. The company's logo is an artistic phoenix pattern called a Fenghuang.

This design was created by the artist Han Meilin. The Chinese name of the airline is written in calligraphy by Deng Xiaoping. To work better with other global carriers, Air China joined the Star Alliance in 2007. It also uses codeshare agreements with many other airlines. These agreements allow different companies to share flight space. This helps passengers travel more efficiently across different airline networks.
