The national flag of Russia is a very famous tricolour. A tricolour is a flag with three equal horizontal bands. The top band is white, the middle is blue, and the bottom is red.

This design is important because it represents the country. Many people recognize these colors today. They have been used in different ways for hundreds of years. The flag helps people identify the Russian nation around the world.

How the flag works is quite simple to see. It uses three stripes of the same height. These stripes sit one on top of the other in a stack.

The colors are very bright and clear. This makes the flag easy to see from far away. In the past, some versions even had a golden double-headed eagle in the middle. Today, the flag is just the three plain colored stripes.

The history of this flag begins with a leader named Peter the Great. He wanted to build a strong navy for Russia. In 1693, he used a white, blue, and red design on a yacht.

Some say he liked the colors of the Dutch Republic. He saw their flag and decided to model his own after it. In 1705, the flag became a symbol for merchant ships.

In 1991, the old tricolour colors returned to the country. President Boris Yeltsin set the exact shades in 1993.

You might notice that other flags look similar to this one. The colors of the Russian flag helped inspire the "Pan-Slavic colors."

Because of this, countries like Slovakia and Slovenia have similar flags. They often add their own special coats-of-arms to tell them apart. This shows how one flag can influence many other places. It is a way to see how history connects different nations together.
