It is a very important part of how the country works. The Central Bank of Russia is the group that makes the coins and paper money. This bank is independent from other parts of the government. The ruble is a very old kind of money. In fact, it is the second-oldest currency still used today. Only the British pound sterling is older.

In the past, the ruble was not just a coin. It was used as a way to measure weight. People used things called the grivna and the denga to measure silver. One theory says the word "ruble" comes from a word meaning "to cut." This might be because people cut pieces of silver to make money. Another idea is that the name comes from a word for a seam. This seam was left behind when silver was poured into a mold.

Many years ago, a leader named Peter the Great changed everything. In 1704, he made the ruble a real circulating coin. He also made it a decimal currency. This means one ruble was divided into 100 smaller parts called kopecks.

This was a very new idea for Europe at that time. Before this, the system was much more confusing. Peter the Great wanted a better way to manage the money of the Russian Empire.

The ruble has gone through many big changes over time. It was the money of the Russian Empire for a long time. Later, it became the Soviet ruble when the Soviet Union was formed in 1922.

When the Soviet Union ended in 1991, the Russian ruble returned in 1992. In 1998, the money changed again to make it easier to use. At that time, 1,000 old rubles were traded for just 1 new ruble.

Today, the ruble is still a very active part of life. It is a free-floating currency, which means its value can change. In 2023, a new version called the digital ruble was introduced.

This is a type of electronic money. While kopecks used to be very common, they are not used as much now because of inflation. You can still see the ruble symbol, which looks like a letter P with a line through it. This symbol helps everyone recognize the money quickly.
