It is a very important part of how the country works. One real is divided into 100 smaller parts called centavos. The Central Bank of Brazil is the group in charge of it. They are the authority that issues the money to the people. Today, the real is the twentieth most traded currency in the world.

To understand the real, you must see how it was made. In 1994, leaders started a plan called the Plano Real. This plan aimed to make the Brazilian economy stable. At first, they used a special unit called the URV. This unit was not used to buy things directly. Instead, it helped set the value for the new real. When it arrived, one real was worth 2,750 cruzeiros reais.

Brazil has a long history of changing its money. Many different names have been used over hundreds of years. Long ago, people used the Portuguese real from the 16th century. Later, they used the old Brazilian real from 1747 to 1942. After that, many versions of the cruzeiro were used. There was a cruzeiro novo from 1967 to 1970. Then came the cruzado and the cruzado novo.

There are many different coins used for the real. The first series of coins started in June 1994. These were made of stainless steel. They included 1, 5, 10, and 50 centavos plus 1 real. A 25 centavos coin was added later that year. In 1998, a second series of coins was introduced. These used different metals like copper-plated steel and bronze.

The value of the real changes often against the U.S. dollar. In 1994, the real was worth exactly one U.S. dollar. Later, it gained value due to large inflows of money. However, it also faced many hard times and crises. For example, it reached a low point during the 2020 pandemic. By December 26, 2024, the dollar hit a high point of R$6.74. These changes show how much the world economy affects Brazil.
