This currency is managed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. This bank is the only group allowed to issue legal money. They work hard to keep prices stable for everyone. They also manage how many notes and coins are in the economy. The bank's Currency Operations Department handles many important jobs. They design, print, and distribute the money across the country. They also take care of old notes when they are no longer used.

One naira is divided into 100 smaller units called kobo.

The bank makes both paper banknotes and metal coins. In 1973, they first released notes for 50 kobo and 1 naira. Later, they added larger notes like the 5, 10, and 20 naira notes. Some notes are even made of a material called polymer. This is a type of plastic that can be very strong. In 2009, the bank switched some notes to this material. However, they later stopped using polymer because of high costs and nature concerns.

The history of the naira began on January 1, 1973. It replaced the old Nigerian pound at a set rate. A man named Obafemi Awolowo gave the currency its name. He created the name "naira" from the word "Nigeria." The first coins were a big step for an independent Nigeria. Before this, the coins were made by a colonial government. In 1991, the bank issued new coins made of steel. They also introduced new notes like the 50 naira note that year.

Many different notes have unique designs and security features.

The 1,000-naira note has a shiny gold strip on the back. This strip changes from green to blue when you tilt it. This helps stop people from making fake money. The 100-naira note once showed a famous place called Zuma Rock. In 2014, a special 100-naira note celebrated 100 years of Nigeria. This note even had a QR code on the back. You could scan it to learn about Nigerian history.

Sometimes the value of the naira changes compared to the US dollar.

In 2023, Nigeria faced a difficult time with its money. The government tried to replace old notes with new ones. This caused a shortage of cash in the streets. Many people held protests because it was hard to find money. In October 2021, the country also launched the eNaira. This is a digital version of the state currency.
