You might see the symbol Fr. or fr. in many shops. In international banking, it uses the code CHF. This stands for Franc. The smallest part of a franc is one hundredth. People call these small parts centimes or rappen.

Long ago, money in Switzerland was very messy. Before the year 1798, many different groups made their own coins. About 75 different groups, like cities and abbeys, made money. This created about 860 different kinds of coins!

Many of these coins came from France or Germany. Some were based on the French livre tournois. Others came from the South German gulden. Because there were so many coins, it was hard to trade. Most people used foreign coins because they were easier to recognize.

Change began with the Helvetic Republic in 1798. This group introduced a new franc. It was modeled after the Bern livre.

This new money was used by many cantons later. However, things were still quite complicated. By 1820, there were still 8,000 different coins in use! Some cantons tried to work together in 1825. They made special coins called Konkordanzbatzen. These coins had a Swiss cross on them. Even so, most people still preferred using gold and silver coins from other lands.

To fix the confusion, Switzerland made a new law in 1848. The federal government became the only group allowed to make money.

On May 7, 1850, the first Federal Coinage Act was passed. This made the Swiss franc the official unit of money. It started with the same value as the French franc. The franc was worth 4.5 grams of fine silver.

For a long time, the money was tied to gold. This made the franc a "safe-haven" currency. People felt their money was very secure. In the year 2000, the link to gold ended. Now, the franc is called fiat money.

Today, the Swiss franc is very important in the world. Between 2011 and 2014, the value of the franc changed a lot.

During the Greek debt crisis, the franc became very strong. This was a hard job for the Swiss National Bank. The bank had to act to stop the franc from becoming too valuable. If the franc is too strong, it can hurt Swiss companies.
