People use the rand to buy things in many ways. It is also used as legal tender in Namibia, Lesotho, and Eswatini. These three countries have their own money, but they also use the rand. In Zimbabwe, the rand is part of a system with many other currencies. This includes the US dollar and the euro.

Learning about the rand starts with its name. The name comes from the Witwatersrand. In English, this means "white waters' ridge."

This is a large ridge where Johannesburg was built. Most of the gold in South Africa was found there. This connection to gold is very important. The currency name links the money to the land itself. It reminds people of the history of mining in the region.

Before the rand, South Africa used pounds, shillings, and pence. A group called the Decimal Coinage Commission looked at this in 1956. They suggested a new way to use money. The rand was introduced in 1961. This was three months before the country became a republic.

To help people learn, the government used a mascot. His name was Decimal Dan. He was known as the "rand-cent man." A radio jingle also helped teach the public about the change.

Money values change all the time compared to other currencies. In 1961, one rand was worth 1.40 US dollars. By 1982, the US dollar became stronger than the rand. Many things caused these changes over the years. Politics and international sanctions played a role. Problems with electricity at Eskom also affected the value.

In 2001, the rand reached a very low point against the dollar. It later recovered and moved back up again.

South Africa uses different coins and notes for daily life. The first notes in 1961 had pictures of Jan van Riebeeck. Later, new notes were made with different designs.

Coins have changed too, from small cents to larger rand coins. Some coins, like the 5-rand coin, use two metals to stop fakes. In 2023, a new series of coins was announced. These new coins show beautiful animals. They include the Springbok, the King Protea, and the Southern Right Whale.
