The rand became the official money in 1961. Before that, the country used pounds. The government even used a mascot named Decimal Dan to help people learn about it.

One rand is made of 100 cents. People use coins and notes to pay for things.

Some coins have special parts to stop fake money. A 5-rand coin uses two different metals. In 2023, new coins were announced. They show beautiful animals like the Springbok and the Southern Right Whale.

The value of the rand changes often. Sometimes it is strong against the US dollar. Other times it is weak. Many things cause these changes. These include trade, politics, and even problems with electricity. The rand is also used in Namibia, Lesotho, and Eswatini. In Zimbabwe, it is one of many types of money used.
