Cent (currency)

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A cent is a small part of a larger unit of money. It represents one hundredth of that main unit. The word itself comes from the Latin word "centum," which means hundred. You might see a cent written with a small sign. This sign is often a lowercase letter "c." In North America, people often put a line through the "c." This symbol looks like ¢. It helps people know exactly how much money is being talked about.

Writing cents follows certain rules depending on where you live. In English and Mexican Spanish, the sign comes after the number. You might write 2¢ or 2c without any space. In Canada, French writing uses a small space before the sign. You might see it written as 2¢ there. Other countries use different ways to show cents. Some use a decimal like $0.75 or €0.99. This shows how many cents make up a whole dollar or euro.

Many different countries use cents or names that sound very similar. For example, the Argentine peso uses centavos. The Japanese yen used to use sen, but that is no longer in use. In the Eurozone, the small coins are called euro cents. Some places use names like sen, santim, or centésimo. Even the British pound uses pence, which is the singular form of penny. Each country has its own special way of naming these small parts.

Over time, some countries have stopped making cent coins entirely. This often happens because of inflation. Inflation means that the prices of things go up over time. Because things cost more, small coins become less useful. Australia stopped making its 1c coin in 1990. New Zealand stopped making theirs in 1988. Canada stopped in 2012, and the United States may stop in 2025. Slovakia was one of the most recent Eurozone countries to stop in 2022.

Even though we use them less, cents are still part of our math. We use them to understand how much things cost. You can see the cent sign on old typewriter keyboards. However, it is not a standard key on most modern computers. You can still find special versions of the symbol in computer code. This helps computers show the right symbol for different languages. Understanding cents helps us understand how money works all over the world.
