In North America, people call the one-cent coin a penny. This name comes from a British coin. People use a small sign for cents. It is often a little letter c. Sometimes a line goes through the c. You might see it written as 2¢ or 5c. In some places, people write it as $0.75.

Many lands use cents or names like them. Some use the name centavo. Others use sen or santim. Many countries have small parts of money. For example, the British pound has 100 pence. The Indian rupee has 100 paise. The Euro also has cents.

Some places do not make cent coins anymore. Australia stopped in 1990. New Zealand stopped in 1988. Canada stopped in 2012. The United States may stop in 2025. This happens because things cost more money now. This is called inflation. Because of this, we use fewer cents today.
