Money uses special signs to show its value. These are called currency symbols.

A bank or a government usually picks the symbol.

Where you place the sign depends on your home. In English-speaking lands, the sign goes before the number. In many other places, it goes after the number. For example, some people write $5. Others write 5€.

Many symbols come from old letters. The pound sign comes from the letter L. This stood for a Roman pound of silver. The euro sign is based on an old Greek letter. The Indian rupee sign blends two different letters together.

Making new symbols is not easy. They must work well on computers. They also need to fit on a keyboard. Designers must make sure they look good in many fonts. If a symbol is too wide, it may not fit. This can be a problem for people using computers. Many designers now make custom versions to fit different styles.
