It is the oldest money in the world still used today.

Many years ago, a leader named King Offa made silver coins. He divided a large weight of silver into 240 parts. These parts were called pennies. This was the start of the pound.

Later, King Henry II made a new kind of coin. He mixed silver with other metals. This made the coins very strong. They did not wear down as fast.

In 1971, the way people used money changed. This was called decimalisation. Before this, one pound was worth 20 shillings. Each shilling had 12 pence. Now, one pound is worth 100 pence.

People still use the pound in many places. Some people call it a "quid." This is a slang word for the pound. The Bank of England is the main bank for this money. It makes the paper notes that people use.
