It is a very important part of the world economy. In fact, it is the oldest currency still in use today. Many countries trade with each other using different types of money. In 2022, the pound was the fourth most-traded currency in the world. It sits behind the US dollar, the euro, and the Japanese yen. This makes it a major tool for global business.

Understanding how the pound works involves looking at its many parts. Today, one pound is divided into 100 pence. You can use the symbol "£" to show pounds. The symbol for a single penny is a small "p." Before 1971, the system was much more complex for people. One pound was worth 20 shillings, and each shilling had 12 pence. This meant there were 240 pence in a single pound.

The history of this money goes back many centuries. It began with the silver penny in medieval England. A leader named King Offa of Mercia helped start this system. He divided a large weight of silver into 240 parts. These parts were the first silver pennies. Later, King Henry II introduced a special type of silver in 1158. He mixed pure silver with other metals to make it stronger. This was called sterling silver, and it did not wear down easily.

Many different people and places have shaped the pound over time. The Bank of England is the main central bank for this currency. It prints its own banknotes and watches over other banks. For example, the Bank of Scotland and Danske Bank also issue notes. In the past, the British Empire used sterling in many colonies. Today, the money is also used in places like the Isle of Man. Some people even use fun slang terms like "quid" or "nicker."

You can see how the pound connects to the wider world. It is part of a special group of currencies used by the IMF. This group helps calculate the value of global money rights. The value of the pound changes compared to other money every day. For instance, you can track its value against the US dollar. You can also see how it compares to the euro. Watching these changes helps us understand how countries trade with one another.
