Long ago, pennies were made of silver. King Offa of Mercia used silver pennies in England. These coins were part of a system used in Europe. For a long time, silver was the main metal for pennies. But silver became very expensive. During the Napoleonic Wars, leaders began using other metals. In 1797, the British government made copper pennies. Later, in 1860, they switched to bronze. Bronze is a mix of copper, tin, and zinc.

In the United States, the penny is a one-cent coin. It has a famous face on it. That face is Abraham Lincoln. He was a great leader. The U.S. penny was last made for daily use on November 12, 2025. It will still be made for people who collect coins.

Some places do not use pennies anymore. Canada stopped making them in 2012. Some people say pennies are hard to count. Others say the metal is worth more than the coin itself. Even so, the penny is a big part of history.
