A carat is a special unit of mass. People use it to weigh gemstones and pearls. It helps jewelers know exactly how heavy a gem is.

This unit is very important for the jewelry world. One carat can be split into 100 smaller points. Each of those points weighs exactly 2 milligrams. A huge diamond is called a paragon. A paragon must weigh at least 100 carats, which is about 20 grams.

The way the carat works has changed over time. Long ago, people used carob seeds to weigh things. They believed these seeds always had the same mass. However, this was not actually true. The seeds varied in weight just like other seeds. In the past, many different countries used their own carat. Some used it for weighing gold. By the 1570s, people began using it for diamonds.

Many groups tried to make a single standard. In 1871, a group in Paris proposed an international carat. This version weighed 205 milligrams. Other places used different amounts for their carats. For example, Cyprus used 187 milligrams. Egypt used 195 milligrams. Berlin used 205.44 milligrams. Even the United Kingdom had its own version. The Board of Trade changed its carat in 1888.

A big change happened in 1907. Leaders met at a conference in Paris. They wanted to create a metric carat. This new carat is exactly 200 milligrams. It is also exactly one-fifth of a gram. Most countries soon accepted this new way. France made the metric carat a law. England was a bit slower to change. They used a law from 1897 to allow it.

The word carat has a very old history. It first appeared in English in the mid-15th century. It comes from the Italian word carato. That word came from Arabic. The Arabic word came from the Greek word kerátion. This Greek word means carob seed. It is a smaller version of the word keras, which means horn. This shows how people once linked seeds to weight.
