He was the first president chosen by the people after the country moved away from military rule. This change happened in 1979 and started a new time called the Second Nigerian Republic. Shagari was born on February 25, 1925, in a town called Shagari. His family was Sunni Muslim Fulani. His father, Aliyu Shagari, was the village head. Before he became a leader, Aliyu worked as a farmer and a trader.

Before he entered politics, Shagari spent time as a teacher. He studied at several schools, including Barewa College and a training college in Zaria. In 1945, he even started a youth group called the Youth Social Circle. He was a person who cared deeply about his country's freedom. He wrote a pamphlet called "Anti Colonialist" to speak about these ideas. He even faced trouble at work for reading certain newspapers. This showed how much he cared about his beliefs early on.

Shagari held many different jobs in the government over many years. He served as a minister for many different areas. As the Minister of Works, he helped build important things like the Eko Bridge in Lagos. He also helped finish the Niger Bridge in 1966. When he was the Minister of Finance, he helped launch the Naira. The Naira is the money that people use in Nigeria today. He even helped start a fund to assist other poor countries in Africa.

As president, he wanted to help the country grow through industry and farming. He started a program called the "Green Revolution." This program gave seeds and fertilizer to farmers to help them grow more food. He also started the Ajaokuta Steel Mill. This was a huge project meant to help Nigeria's industry grow.

Being a leader can be a very hard job. Shagari's time as president faced some difficult moments. The country dealt with economic downturns and political instability. These were times when the economy struggled and politics became unsettled. In 1983, a military coup ended his time in office.
