He led the country from 1966 until 1975. During his time in power, he helped manage many big changes. He was a man who believed in keeping Nigeria as one united nation. This belief guided many of the choices he made as a leader. He wanted all the different groups in Nigeria to live together.

Later, he chose a different path by joining the army in 1954. He went to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom for training. He also served with the United Nations in the Congo. These experiences helped him become a high-ranking officer in the Nigerian Army.

In 1966, a series of big changes happened in the Nigerian government. A group of junior officers led a coup to take control.

Because of these events, Gowon was chosen to be the new head of state. He was a soldier who had not been involved in politics before. This made him a safe choice for a nation with many tensions. He worked to stabilize the country during this very difficult time.

One of the biggest challenges during his rule was the Nigerian Civil War. This war is also called the Biafra War. It began after the Eastern Region tried to become its own country called Biafra.

The war lasted for thirty months and ended in January 1970. It was a very sad time in history with many people losing their lives. To help manage the country, Gowon created twelve new states to replace the old four regions. This was done to give different groups their own areas to lead.

When the war finally ended, Gowon wanted to help the people heal. He gave a famous speech saying there would be "no victor, no vanquished."
