He was born on March 3, 1924, in a place called Ibeku. His family was Igbo and Catholic. He grew up in Umuahia and Kano. When he was 18, he joined the Nigerian Regiment. This was a big choice for him. He wanted to serve his country as a soldier. He worked very hard to move up the ranks. He went to school in England to learn more. This helped him become a high-ranking officer later in life.

His military career was full of many different jobs. In 1946, he was sent to England for training. He later became a second lieutenant in 1949. He even served as an aide to Queen Elizabeth II in 1956. This was a very special honor for him. In 1960, he led the 5th Battalion in Kano. He also went to the Republic of the Congo with the United Nations. During this time, he helped save a group of Austrian medics.

For this brave work, he received a Gallantry Medal from Austria.

In 1965, he became the first indigenous officer to lead the Nigerian Army. This meant he was the first person from Nigeria to hold that top job. However, the country was facing many hard problems. In January 1966, a group of soldiers led by Major Chukwuma Nzeogwu tried to take over. This was called a coup. Ironsi managed to stop this group and take control. He became the military head of state on January 17, 1966. He led the country for 194 days. He tried to make new rules to change how Nigeria worked.

His time as leader was very difficult for the nation. He made a rule called Decree No. 34. This rule changed how the different parts of Nigeria worked together. Some people in the Northern Region did not like this change. They worried that it gave too much power to one group. This created a lot of tension and disagreement. Because of these worries, a second revolt happened in July 1966. This was known as a counter-coup. It was led by soldiers from the Northern Region.

On July 29, 1966, the situation became very serious in Ibadan. Ironsi was staying at the Government House there. A group of soldiers led by Theophilus Danjuma arrived to arrest him. Sadly, Aguiyi-Ironsi was killed during this event. His death was a very sad moment in Nigerian history. People still talk about his life and his many roles today. He was also known for carrying a swagger stick with a stuffed crocodile. Some people even called him the "crocodile" because of his name.
