Brazilian gold rush

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A gold rush is a time when many people rush to a place to find gold. In the 1690s, this happened in Brazil, which was then a colony of the Portuguese Empire.

This period became the longest gold rush in history. It also created the largest gold mines in all of South America. The rush began in the mountains of Minas Gerais. This area became a huge center for mining and changed the land forever.

Adventurers called bandeirantes started the search for gold. These people traveled in small groups to explore the deep interior of Brazil.

Many bandeirantes were of mixed indigenous and European background. They learned how to live like the native people to survive. In 1695, a man named Manuel Borba Gato found gold at Rio das Velhas. This discovery led to the massive rush of people to the region. To help people travel, the crown created a path called the Estrada Real in 1697.

Many different people moved to the gold regions during this time. More than 400,000 Portuguese people and 500,000 African slaves arrived to mine.

Many people even left their sugar farms on the coast to find gold. By 1725, half of Brazil's people lived in the southeast. A city called Vila Rica was built in 1698. Later, it was named Ouro Preto. By 1730, Ouro Preto had 40,000 people. This made it the largest city in Latin America at that time.

Gold was also found much further away on the Cuiabá River.

In 1718 or 1719, Pascoal Moreira Cabral Leme and Antonio Pires de Campos found it. People traveled a very long path of 3,500 kilometers to reach it. They used large groups of canoes called monsoons to travel the rivers. This trip was very hard because of mosquitoes and river rapids. Some travelers faced danger from groups like the Payaguá people. These journeys were long and often very difficult for the travelers.

This gold rush changed how people lived and where they stayed.

It helped the Portuguese settle more land toward the Bolivian border. Later, in 1830, a British company called St. John d'el Rey Mining Company opened a mine. It was located in Nova Lima. This was the largest gold mine in Latin America. The company used new ways to manage the mine. They worked there for 125 years, showing how mining changed over time.
