A gold rush, or gold fever, happens when someone finds gold. This discovery often brings an onrush of miners seeking a fortune.

These rushes can also include other precious metals or rare minerals. Many major rushes happened during the 19th century. They took place in places like Australia, Greece, and Brazil. Other rushes occurred in Canada, Chile, and South Africa.

These events can change how the whole world trades. The new gold can make the global economy grow much faster.

Mining usually starts in a very simple way. It often begins when one person finds placer gold. This gold is found in sand or gravel. At first, a miner might just use a small pan.

If there is a lot of gold, groups build sluice boxes. These wooden boxes help people wash gold much faster. Later, mining becomes much bigger and more complex. People might use dams, canals, or even deep tunnels. They may use large machines like dredges to find more. Some miners even use high-pressure water in hydraulic mining.

History shows that gold rushes have happened for a long time. People in ancient Greece were mining gold many years ago. The writer Diodorus Siculus described this long ago. In the 1800s, many famous rushes changed the world. The California Gold Rush began in 1848 in the Sierra Nevada.

This rush helped California become a state in 1850. In Australia, the Victorian gold rush happened in 1851. The Klondike Gold Rush took place in the Yukon from 1896 to 1899. Even in Finland, a rush happened at the Ivalo River in 1870. These events moved many people to new lands.

Different places had very different types of gold rushes. In South Africa, the Witwatersrand rush helped found Johannesburg. By 1896, South Africa produced 23 percent of the world's gold.

Other rushes happened in places like Nevada and Montana. Some towns even switched from mining gold to mining silver or copper.

Gold rushes did more than just find shiny metal. They helped people settle in new and far-off regions. Many people who did not find gold stayed to farm. This helped build new cultures and ways of life.

These rushes also inspired many famous books and stories. For example, the book The Call of the Wild was written during this time. Movies like Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush also tell these stories. Gold rushes changed how people traveled and how they lived. They turned quiet areas into busy, growing communities.
