He was born in New Jersey on October 8, 1810. His family lived on a place called Round Mountain Farm. Later, they moved to a town named Lambertville. James was the oldest of four children. He was also the only boy in his family. He grew up learning how to work with wood. This skill would lead him on a great journey west.

James traveled many places before finding gold. He lived in Indiana and Illinois. Then he moved to Missouri in 1844. He tried farming along the Missouri River there. However, he got sick with malaria. A doctor told him to move to improve his health. He joined a group of travelers heading west. He reached Oregon in 1845. At Sutter's Fort, James met a man named John Sutter. Sutter was the leader of the area. He hired James to help build a sawmill. The sawmill needed to be near water. James chose a spot called Coloma on the American River. Construction began in late August. The crew included local Native Americans and soldiers. They worked hard to build the mill.

On January 24, 1848, everything changed. James was looking at the river bed near the mill. He saw shiny flecks in the water. His crew tested the metal with soap and hammers. They found out it was real gold! John Sutter tested it too. He said the gold was very pure. This news started the California Gold Rush.

Thousands of people rushed to California to find wealth.

Life was very hard for James after the discovery. The gold seekers left the sawmill to find riches. The mill fell apart and stopped working. James did not make money from the gold. He tried farming and starting a vineyard. He even tried mining near Kelsey, California. Most of these plans failed. He became very poor by the end of his life. He died on August 10, 1885. Later, a group built a special monument to honor him. It is the first monument in California.
