He was born on April 10, 1796, in Logan County, Kentucky. His family moved many times as they lived on the frontier. They lived in Georgia, Kentucky, and Missouri before settling in Louisiana. As a boy, James learned to survive in the wild. He learned how to fish, farm, and use tools. He even learned to rope alligators from a Native American friend. He grew up to speak English, Spanish, and French fluently.

Bowie became a legend because of a famous fight.

In 1827, a fight broke out on a sandbar near Vidalia, Louisiana. This event is known as the Sandbar Fight. During the fight, Bowie used a very large knife to defend himself. This fight made him very famous across the South. People began making their own versions of his large blade. These tools became known as Bowie knives. Some people even went to special schools to learn how to use them.

Bowie also worked as a businessman in the South. He and his brothers worked to develop large estates in Louisiana. They were land speculators, which means they bought land to sell it later. They also worked with a man named Jean Lafitte to raise money. This money helped them buy large plantations, like the Acadia Plantation. They even built a steam mill to grind sugar cane. However, Bowie also faced legal trouble regarding land claims in Arkansas. Some people claimed the Bowies had used fake papers to buy land.

Later in life, Bowie moved to Texas in 1830.

He became a Mexican citizen and married Ursula Veramendi. Ursula was the daughter of a Mexican official named Juan Martín de Veramendi. While in Texas, Bowie led a group to look for the San Saba mine. During this trip, his small group had to fight off a large raiding party. Even though they did not find the mine, the event made him even more famous.

Bowie's story ended during the Texas Revolution.

However, he became very sick and had to stay in his bed. He died on March 6, 1836, along with the other defenders. Today, he is remembered as a hero in Texas history.
