Nat Love was a famous American cowboy and writer. He was born into slavery on June 14, 1854. His family lived on a plantation in Davidson County, Tennessee. His father, Sampson, worked as a slave foreman. His mother managed the kitchen on the plantation. Nat had an older sister named Sally and a brother named Jordan. Even though laws made it hard for Black people to learn, Nat learned to read and write. His father helped him with his lessons.

Nat was very talented at working with horses. He worked many odd jobs to help his family. He won a horse in a raffle two different times. He sold those horses for $50 each. He used that money to move to the Western United States. At age 16, he started his new life. He traveled to Dodge City, Kansas, to find work. He worked with cattle drivers from the Duval Ranch.

In 1872, he moved to work at the Gallinger Ranch in Arizona. He said he met famous people like Billy the Kid there. In 1876, he claimed to win many prizes at a rodeo in Deadwood. Because of this, people gave him the nickname "Deadwood Dick."

Nat had many adventures while traveling the West. In October 1877, he said he was captured by Pima Indians in Arizona. He wrote that he was hurt during this time. He said the group helped him get well. They even wanted to adopt him into their tribe. Eventually, Nat stole a pony and escaped to West Texas. Later, he settled down and married Alice Owens in Denver, Colorado.

Nat Love lived many different lives. In 1890, he worked as a Pullman porter on a railroad. He moved with his family to several western states. In 1907, he published a book about his life.
